Student Question - Is Gum bad for you?

A student asked: Is gum bad for you?

Answer: Gum is probably not very harmful if you are chewing a gum very low in sugar. The negative aspect of gum is that it trains our brain & taste buds to want something sweet. This can lead some people to eat more sugar or junk food. However, if the gum is preventing you from unnecessary snacking (on junk food), then it's probably not bad.

  1. What do you really mean by unnecessary snacking on junk food. What else does gum high in sugar do to you other than training our brains to want something sweet?

  2. When we train our brain to always want something sweet, it could lead to us going for the sugary junk food like cookies, crackers, or cakes.

Gum high in sugar could also do damage to your teeth and gums -- all that sugar can lead to cavities.
