HIIT & Squats

Currently, 4th and 5th grade students are participating in High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT training. This is an awesome way to train that involves high intensity intervals and low intensity intervals of exercise. We have done 30 seconds high (sprinting)/90 seconds low (walking), and 20 seconds high/60 seconds low. Research has shown that this type of training is excellent for boosting metabolism, improving aerobic capacity, strengthening the heart, and improving overall muscular fitness. The New York Times is even talking about it. Check out the article below:

The NY Times also mentions "squats" as being an excellent exercise to include in a fitness routine. During our dynamic warm-up, 4th and 5th graders do squats every PE class.

  1. What does high intensity really mean and what does it do for you. I've allways wondered what good they do for you because they are so easy to do. I also wonder why you put your hands back in that on position.

  2. High intensity basically means your maximum effort or going all out on an exercise or movement. So high intensity exercise could be just about anything you do at maximum effort - sprinting, cycling, swimming, jumping, etc.

If you are saying squats are easy, try doing them for 1 minute straight without stopping. Make sure you take 2 seconds to go down, and 1 second coming up. If you still think they are easy, try doing them for 2 minutes without stopping. After you've mastered the body weight squat, eventually we would add weight to the squat which will add difficulty.

Putting the hands up by the shoulders helps keep the back in a good position, preventing you from going "humpback." It also helps keep the chest out and the hips back.

  4. We will be doing more HIIT workouts in the future (next year)

Aerobic capacity is basically how well your body can convert oxygen into energy during exercise. If you have a high aerobic capacity than you will have a high amount of endurance
