Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution - ABC 7:00 PM Friday!
Hey everyone. I wanted to share the news of a great new show starting Friday night, 7:00 pm on ABC. It's called Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. Jamie Oliver is a renowned British chef who has a mission to change the way America eats. In this series, he travels to the most unhealthy town in the US - Huntington, West Virginia. His goal is for the people to learn about what fresh food really is, where the food comes from, and how a diet rich in fresh, whole foods can impact health in a drastically positive way. It should present some wonderful information to the public. I encourage you to tune in!

#5 Exercise is great because...
Responding to Exercise - Breathing Rate
When you work harder and move faster during exercise, you need more oxygen to keep you moving at that pace. Thus, you take in more oxygen and start breathing at a faster rate. If you have a high aerobic capacity, you will be able to sustain your exercise for longer periods of time.

These girls showed great perseverance and commitment after the slow start to the season. Instead of giving up, they worked harder and were determined to be successful this season. Great job ladies.

Frisbee Golf
Currently, students are learning a great new way to exercise called Frisbee Golf. Frisbee golf is much life regular golf, only it's about throwing a frisbee through a net instead of hitting a golf ball into a hole. Below you can check out the students perfecting their skills as they make their way through the challenging indoor courses set up in the gym.

The Body's Response to Exercise - Heart Beat
When we exercise, certain physiological changes occur in our bodies. SDA elementary students are learning why these changes occur. For example, when we start to move faster and work harder, our hearts respond by beating faster. The reason for this is the greater demand for blood (oxygen, energy) coming from our muscles. In order for our muscles to perform at a higher intensity, the heart must respond by supplying more blood to the muscles. This allows the muscles to contract with the force necessary to sustain movement.

Strong Abs
Strong abdominals (or abs - your stomach muscles) are very important for overall fitness. Having strong abs can contribute to easier movement, more power as an athlete, better stability/balance, better posture, and injury prevention. You don't necessarily have to have a six-pack, but a thinner waistline almost always indicates decreased risk of many diseases. A stronger midsection will definitely improve your performance in many areas of your life. Below you will see 4th graders testing their abdominal strength through a curl-up test.
Batter Up!
Students experienced extensive batting practice during parts of the baseball/softball unit. Proper stance, grip on the bat, weight distribution, and swing were covered. Below you can see some clips of practice and game situations.
Toxic Blast!
Watch the video below as 5th graders try to protect their "town" from the toxic sludge ball. During this game, students display throwing power using correct throwing mechanics. They have to protect their town by throwing balls at the toxic sludge ball (exercise ball) and prevent it from rolling into their town. Unfortunately, the town on the other side gets sludged.
